GAEB .x83 — frequently asked questions
What is a GAEB .x83 file?
GAEB DA-XML is the German exchange format for a Leistungsverzeichnis (bill of quantities). The .x83 phase is the award file (Angebotsaufforderung) a public client issues to bidders. It carries the position numbers, texts, quantities and units of the works to be priced. Steinlog reads it and shows it as a clean table.
Is this GAEB viewer really free?
Yes. Opening the file and reading it on screen is free with no account. You only enter an email when you want the full Excel export delivered. The file you upload is parsed in your browser session and is never stored on our servers.
What is the difference between .x83 and .x84?
They are phases of the same GAEB DA-XML format. .x83 is the award file (Angebotsaufforderung) the client sends out; .x84 is the bid file (Angebotsabgabe) the contractor returns with prices. This viewer reads the .x83 award file; Steinlog can also produce a valid .x84 bid file inside the bid room.
Is my file uploaded or stored anywhere?
No. The .x83 file is parsed in memory in your own browser session and is never written to our servers. We keep only a small, non-personal summary of the result, such as the number of positions. Your email is used solely to deliver the Excel export.
Can I open the file in Excel directly?
GAEB DA-XML is XML, not a spreadsheet, so Excel cannot open a .x83 file directly. This tool converts it to a clean, normalized Excel workbook you can open, filter and price — emailed to you in one click.
What file size is supported?
Up to 4 MB per .x83 file, which covers the large majority of award files. For an unusually large export, split it into parts or get in touch with us.
